- In visual strength grading, the number of knots in each beam, their position and the occurrence of defects are assessed separately, and the strength class of the beam is determined on that basis.
- Dimensional accuracy is most important, but because wood is a hygroscopic material, tangential dimensional changes may occur. This means wood tries to balance its moisture content with the relative humidity and temperature of the surrounding air. When moisture conditions change, wood either shrinks or swells. Spruce absorbs less moisture than pine, so moisture-related dimensional changes in spruce are smaller.
- In the C24 marking, C means softwood and 24 indicates the normative bending strength of the sawn timber, N/mm2.
