European larch is naturally durable for outdoor use, while pine can only withstand outdoor conditions when thermally treated or impregnated. European larch has several advantages over regular pine in outdoor conditions:
- Durability: Due to its high density and resin content, European larch is naturally more resistant to decay, pests and weather conditions than pine.
- Stability: European larch is a harder and more stable wood species than pine, which means it is less prone to twisting, warping or cracking. This is especially important outdoors, where wood is constantly exposed to moisture, temperature changes and weather.
- Appearance: European larch has a beautiful, natural solid wood look and develops a warm silver-grey tone over time. The greying process can be accelerated by treating the board with an iron sulphate solution. By comparison, pine can turn grey quickly outdoors and age rapidly under the influence of UV radiation and weather.
- Environmental friendliness: European larch is a sustainable species native to Europe. Larch is a quickly renewable resource grown in well-managed forests.
