St puit püüab ühtlustada oma niiskust ümbritseva õhu suhtelise niiskuse ja temperatuuriga. Kui niiskusolud muutuvad, tõmbub puit kas kokku või paisub. Kuusk imab vähem niiskust kui mänd ning seetõttu on kuuse niiskusest tingitud mahumuutused väiksemad.
